“Previously untold story of the not-so-simple history of the Jewish Brigade. This WWII fighting unit represents a foundation of the Israeli warrior spirit and the source of that country's strength and limitations. The two key episodes are fighting/avenging Germans in the final days of the war and helping refugees on their exodus to Israel… Rage and destruction coupled with salvation and rebirth …form the soul of a nation…” (Exerpted from a review by Eric Antonow (Palo Alto, CA United States)

“We Visit Your Loved Ones When You Can’t”

Dear Friends & Supporters,

“Smile on Seniors of Northridge“ Volunteers have been visiting seniors since 2008 and our charity is working hard to recruit more volunteers so we can visit more seniors. To keep our programs going, we need your support, now more than ever.

Keep in mind that “Smile on Seniors of Northridge” is NOT asking for cash donations at this time. In keeping with our fundraising efforts through recycling, we can offer you the opportunity to purchase high quality remanufactured ink cartridges at manufacturer discount prices and support “Smile on Seniors of Northridge” at the same time.  We can do this because we have partnered with Planet Green, located right here in Chatsworth, for over a year now. Planet Green provides high quality ink cartridges at discounted prices.  We know this, because we are using their cartridges.

This is a great opportunity for you to help seniors by supporting our program of volunteers that visit seniors one-on-one. Make a difference today.  Go to the “Smile on Seniors of Northridge” Planet Green website now!  You know you always need ink.  Do it Now!

Visit the “Smile on Seniors of Northridge” Planet Green webpage at:

http://www.planetgreenrecycle.com/smileonseniors

15% of your total purchases will be donated to “Smile on Seniors of Northridge.”

Your support will make sure that more and more volunteers will visit more seniors.

Remember, “We Visit Your Loved Ones When You Can’t.”

Honor the Elderly – Save the Planet

Planet Green also helps us by making cash donations in exchange for used cartridges and for used cell phones.  Call me, Kenneth, 818 324-5828, and let’s discuss how you can be a part of our effort to preserve our environment through recycling and help seniors.

Currently you can drop off cartridges at Porter Ranch Pharmacy, on the corner of Rinaldi and Tampa.  Say, “Hi”, to Phil for me.  If Porter Ranch is not a convenient location, call me at:

818-324-5828 and we’ll arrange a better solution.  Thank you.

All the Best, Kenneth

Loneliness often leads to depression. This is especially true when it comes to the elderly.  When an active person begins to lose the ability to see, to hear and to get around on their own, it's understandable and even predictable that negative feelings will surface and they begin to feel a sense of helplessness.  When a person's faculties are all functioning normally, people have the ability to create ways to deal with negative events and feelings in their lives.

People that normally would read or watch television as a way of coping with intense negative feelings are often at a loss when they begin to lose their hearing and sight often become depressed.  In many cases, drugs are prescribed and sometimes even help, but the downside is that these drugs often have unpleasant side effects.  Seniors especially are very susceptible to these side effects and often reject taking the drugs.  A friendly visit, a kind word and even a gentle touch can often improve a person's sense of wellbeing.  Speak to any director of a facility for the elderly and you will hear a very sad fact, "Even the seniors who have family members who come to visit regularly are spending most of their time feeling lonely and helpless to deal  with all of the negative emotions they feel. "

One nonprofit organization that addresses these very difficult emotional and psychological issues is "Smile on Seniors of Northridge".  They send volunteers out into the community to visit seniors on a regular basis at no cost to the seniors.  Smile on Seniors of Northridge is also proactively educating community members about the benefits of volunteering and helping to improve the lives of seniors in hopes that their efforts are continued for years to come.

Remember, "We visit your loved ones when you can't", says Kenneth Spector of Smile on Seniors of Northridge. Make a difference and Become a Volunteer! We need your donations of time and money.

Sitting quietly and by herself in the corner of the communal living room at an assisted living center, Edith's day is spent remembering her family and friends who are no longer living, and her many travels, which are no longer possible due to her failing health. Her face brightens with a beautiful smile when her new friend, a volunteer from Smile on Seniors, enters the room for a visit. They sit together and share views on current events, and stories from their childhoods, and learn much from each other. When the volunteer leaves, Edith looks forward to next week's visit.

Founded in 2006 by the Chabad-Lubavitch International, the program has a  goal of harnessing the caring of local communities to visit with seniors,  regardless of their faith. The Smile on Seniors Northridge program was started in May 2008 by Kenneth Spector as a way of honoring his aunt and uncle, Doris and Bill Martin. Smile on Seniors enriches the lives of seniors by coordinating visits by volunteers with seniors who reside in living facilities in the Northridge area. They are currently visiting seniors in the Reminiscence Neighborhood at Sunrise Brighton Gardens every Sunday. Smile on Seniors also provides holiday chaplaincy services at senior facilities and has recently started working with the Volunteer Spiritual Care Department at Northridge Hospital.

In the North San Fernando Valley area, there are over 1,000 seniors and 72 senior living facilities. Smile on Seniors would like to make sure that each of those seniors has a visitor. "Our seniors have so much to teach us and so many stories to tell. Our volunteer visitors always say that their lives have been made better as a result of visiting the seniors. It's rewarding for them both, and makes our community a better place", says Kenneth Spector, Director of the program. The Smile on Seniors program is actively seeking volunteers to be part of this heartwarming experience and to support the organization. If you are interested in more information, please contact Kenneth Spector, at 818-324-5828.
